If you have been living under a rock for the last few years, you might not have heard about one of the most popular prime time soap operas that are airing on the CW right now: Dynasty TV show.
Dynasty TV show is a contemporary remake of the award-winning 1980s soap opera, the original Dynasty TV show, which aired on ABC for nine years from 1981 to 1989.
The show was piloted in Sep '16 and became a series in May '17. In Oct '17, the show aired on the CW channel (only for US audiences) and on Netflix later (available everywhere). Since 2017, the Dynasty TV show has been premiering on CW every season and is presently in its 5th season. The 5th season premiered just before the end of 2021, on 20th Dec.
The show begins when Fallon Carrington's wealthy industrialist father Blake Carrington gets engaged to Cristal Flores. Cristal is a rival of Fallon's at their place of work: Blake's company Carrington Atlantic.
Fallon is unhappy about this engagement and decides to interfere and break it through some scheming and machinations. However, these schemes backfired and ended up with her losing a promotion that she was expecting. At this point, she decides to go to Jeff Colby, Blake's business competitor, leaving her job at Carrington Atlantic.
Back at the Carrington home, Cristal's nephew Sam arrives and gets involved with Fallon's gay brother Steven. Sam is portrayed as an opportunistic person, and with the help of information that he gathers through his relationship with Steven, he threatens to expose Fallon's dubious past.
Things take a sudden turn when Cristal's former lover is found dead, and the Carrington's come together to protect the family name. The show then moves to Atlanta, and more characters are added, especially Blake's ex-wife Alexis, and Adam, who is a long-lost son to Blake and Alexis.

Fallon Carrington's wealthy father, Blake Carrington, and owner of the energy business Carrington Atlantic gets engaged to Cristal, Fallon's rival employee in Carrington's firm. Fallon is outraged because she expected to be named the COO of the business instead.
Fallon initially believes that Cristal is a gold digger (she is about the same age as Fallon herself), but it later comes to light that Cristal is principled and truly loves Blake.
Cristal's humble background makes her a misfit in Carrington's world. Fallon schemes with their Chauffeur, Culhane, who is also her secret lover, to oust Cristal, but her plans are foiled. She then decides to join Blake's nemesis, Jeff Colby. Cristal's shady nephew, Sammy Jo, arrives with a bagful of secrets from Cristal's past. Many other twists and turns take place in Carrington's house.
After Season 1's shocking fiery closure, Carringtons shake off the loss of Cristal and their dad's company. Fallon tries to revamp the organization, but her love life and romance with another wealthy family interfere. Both Blake and Alexis are against this relationship.
Meanwhile, Colby's rivalry starts to cause a lot of heartburn to the Carrington's, and several new Colby's are introduced, esp Dominique Deveraux. The Carrington's continue to stick together when threatened despite the new distractions.
Fallon is now surrounded on all sides by rivals. Including Adam, her own brother. Blake comes back into the mix to reclaim his legacy, while Dominique is looking to get back what she lost as well.
Fallon tries to make things work with Liam. A lot of new faces are introduced in this season as well.
Fallon and Liam just want to lead a normal, happy married life, but that's not going to be so easy for anyone with the Carrington name! Blake and Cristal are trying to make their marriage work again, while Adam wants to move out of Carrington's shadows. Alexis and Dominique strike a secret deal to deceive Jeff and get back their rightful legacy. Sammy Jo and Culhane team up to make the hotel business work.
Seasons 5 has just begun!
The original Dynasty TV show aired on ABC from 12th Jan '81 to 11th May '89, a total of nine seasons. It was created by Esther and Richard Shapiro and produced by Aaron Spelling. The show was designed by ABC to compete with one of the most popular day time opera shows of the time: Dallas (which used to air on CBS)
The show was also based on the same set of characters as the new Dynasty TV show. It was based on the lives of the Carringtons, owners of Carrington Atlantic, a rich family that lives in Denver, CO. The show was all about the intrigue and romances of the main characters of the Carrington family.
The original Dynasty TV show cast John Forsythe in the pivotal role of Blake Carrington, and the character of Krystel was played by Linda Evans. Blake's former wife Alexis is played by Joan Collins.
While the first season of the show was rather lackluster, the show shot to fame in its second season after the arrival of Collins and entered the top 10 on the charts. It became the no.1 show in America by 1985.
In its last two seasons, the TV show Dynasty lost its way a bit, and its viewership declined significantly. It was ultimately canceled in 1989. A total of 220 episodes were aired for the original Dynasty TV show.
The Dynasty TV show currently airing on CW is more contemporary in its thought process than the original Dynasty TV show. For example, Steven's character as a homosexual man in the 1980's was shown as something that Blake was never comfortable with in the original show, but in the new version of the Dynasty TV show, this is shown as a nonissue for Blake.
Another example is that Sammy Jo's character in the original show was a woman; however, in the reboot, he is shown as a gay man. The new show is thus more comfortable with homosexuality than the older one.
In the new Dynasty TV show, the Colby family and the chauffeur to the Carrington's, Michael Culhane is an African American. Similarly, Cristal and her nephew are Latinx characters. Thus, the show has clearly tried to update to a more racially diverse cast and crew as well.
There are other differences as well. The setting of the show was originally Denver, CO, which remained as is throughout the original show. However, in the new Dynasty TV show, the setting is shifted to Atlanta, GE, after the first season.
CW is a joint venture between two of the most popular content creators in the US: CBS Corp and WB TV. "CW" is a reference to the first two letters of the two partners, respectively.
