A while back, I set up my brand new Insta profile and was looking to add some old pics from college which highlighted my "sweet 16" look. I found a couple of pics I loved back in the day, but the only problem was that I took them from these really old camera phones with 2MP and 8MP cameras.
Compared to today's super high-res images, they looked like the work of an impressionist painter! The blurriness and lack of focus were embarrassing; I just couldn't imagine putting them up on social media.
That's when I came across this really cool application called DVDFab Photo Enhancer AI. It made my 20-year-old pics come to life, just like I shot them on my iPhone 13 Pro!
You might be hearing about Artificial Intelligence (AI) a lot these days. In simple terms, it's software that tries to mimic what a human being can do or imagine in our heads!
You may not have noticed it, but our brain can recognize people from blurred images, fill in gaps in an image with shadows or low light, and do many other amazing things that machines simply can't do.
Or can they?
By using millions of observations, images, and state of the art machine learning models (called CNN's, the same stuff Facebook uses to identify and tag you and your friends from your photos), AI photo enhancers can do the impossible - making a dull, colorless and blurred image come to life!
Suppose you are a big fan of Lelouch Lamperouge, one of the most complex characters in Anime history. He is your Waifu, and you would love to drape your walls with life-sized posters depicting him.
But where can you get these pics online that you can print out on a wall-sized scale? With DVDFab's amazing software, you can enhance a standard image 40 times its current pixel size, and you don't even have to wait that long to do it!
Sure, there's Waifu2x, but it's got nothing on what DVDFab can do for you! The upscaling is simply effortless and has superb clarity despite the 40 fold increase in pixel size!
My mom still carries some old pics of Nana from back in the '50s. She cherishes those photos like crazy and carries them with her anywhere she goes.
When I downloaded DVDFab and saw the "Colorize" option there, I thought it might just be a color enhancer for dull images. To my surprise, I found out that DVDFab can add color to a B&W picture! It blew my mind!
I tried it out with my Nana's pics, and sure enough, the results were surreal! My mom broke down and told me that this was the first time she had seen Nana the way she looked since she left us!
The next thing that I did was get my little sister in on the action. She was trying to make a collage of some of her friends from a photo they took together, with cartoon effects. She tried her hands on a few online apps, but none gave satisfactory results.
I asked her to give me the pics, and lo and behold, with one click, she had the funniest picture of her gang she had laid eyes on! The caricatures were wildly hilarious, and she had the best time showing them to all her friends.
Coming back to those Instagram pics that I was talking about at the start - I decided to give those pics a whirl with DVDFab.
To my utter dismay, my pics went from a blurry piece of nonsense to brilliant, clear, crisp lines that reminded me what I looked like 20 years back! I compared it with a physical picture of mine from the same time, and the detail was simply unbelievable! It was like having taken a DSLR camera pic 20 years ago!
The app was able to correct minor aberrations, and it even removed a small halo under my face due to the sun shining at an awkward angle!
DVDFab's Photo enhancer can take any image and grow it forty times in size (not just your Waifu). I was totally shocked to learn this because I can understand how an anime's size can be enhanced (after all, it's an artificial digital image). But how does DVDFab Photo Enhancer AI know how to fill in details in an actual photo taken from my camera?
Well, this is where the real magic of AI comes in. By using millions of similar images, examining facial features, body shapes, and other such details, DVDFab's photo enhancer has become a powerhouse of image upscaling.
It can take a low res photo, and add details to it to make the image crisper, sharper, and more accurate, even add a bit of detail to those pixels that are blurred so that the upscaled image remains as good as your original image.
Believe me, even at 40 times; my photos carried every possible detail in a very crisp and clear way!
Another cool thing that DVDFab can do is take out those pesky luminance and chroma noises from your image, making them look cleaner and sharper. Your low light images will look like they were taken in broad daylight while ensuring that the image does not get modified or distorted in any way.
How does DVDFab do this? Well, again, it's a lot of technical advancements in the field of AI. But that doesn't mean that you need to know everything behind the high-quality AI that runs in the background to enjoy the results in your images.
With a single click, you can take care of all those small mistakes you made while taking an otherwise perfect pic!
Perhaps you took the perfect shot of the "Mentos in the Coke" experiment, with the coke just about to whoosh out? Or maybe that well-timed pic of your friend getting a piece of cake on their face on their birthday?
Such perfectly timed pictures usually have one problem - because you have to take them so fast, they tend to become blurry. But does that mean that all your effort and timing went to waste?
Till now, that was the case. But not anymore. With DVDFab's proprietary AI models, you can restore those blurry pics to their pristine state, just like taking the perfect picture at the perfect moment, every time!
There are other competitors to DVDFab's product in the market, but none of them is as good. I have briefly described them below.
Perhaps the most popular and well-known one is Remini Photo Enhancer. Remini has been around since 2019 and has one of the most advanced AI-based image restoration programs, as acknowledged from its 4.4-star rating, despite more than 50 million downloads.
I made a thorough comparison between these two strong contenders in the AI-based photo enhancement field. I found DVDFab a better option for overall versatility and the number of features offered.
While Remini does a better job of removing blurriness in pictures of humans, it does not have all these cool applications like image enlargement (it can double the size up to 4096 pixels, but that's it), colorization, and cartoonization.
Letsenhance.io is another good photo enhancer available online. Letsenhance.io also uses proprietary AI models to deliver enhanced photos.
This tool is quite close to DVDFab's photo enhancer in terms of the features offered. For example, you can use it as a photo resolution enhancer to increase images 16 times their original pixel size, something which Remini could not do.
You can also use it for removing blurs, adding light to darker spots in the photograph, enhancing adjusting color and tone, and even making smart AI-based enhancements to the photos.
However, on a feature-to-feature comparison, Letsenhance.io falls short of DVDFab's photo enhancer. For example, DVDFab can upscale your photo up to 40 times, cartoonize it, and even add color to black and white pics. These features are simply not available on Letsenhance.io's photo enhancer online.
Another thing that I observed while editing some of my pics was that Letsenhance.io uses comparatively longer time (about 1.5 times that of DVDFab) to effect changes.
One thing that I loved about Gigapixel AI is that it's available for a flat $100 fee one time, unlike the subscription models used by the likes of Remini and Letsenhance.io.
I find it personally jarring to pay for subscriptions every month. In this matter, DVDFab has the best pricing model because you can buy the product one time or use it on a subscription basis; the choice is entirely yours.
On the other hand, what's bad here is that the noise removal and image quality enhancement software DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI need to be bought separately (the bundle costs twice as much). If you compare that with the one-time cost of DVDFab, then DVDFab offers a much better deal.
Without these two crucial tools, Gigapixel AI is simply a great photo resolution enhancer. It can enhance images six times the original size, and I must say that the output that I got was quite good even on large portrait images which had minor details in the background.
If you are looking simply for photo enlargement for a commercial purpose (such as for product images), Gigapixel might be a decent option. But otherwise, it is not a comparable product to the others I have mentioned, especially the product from DVDFab.
After looking at the major AI photo enhancer products available for users like me, I made a bit of a comparison table to help me make the right choice. Just look at the comparison table below:
